Vandy’s Got Talent
Dec. 18, 2014—So in case you haven’t heard yet, Vanderbilt is home to students with UNBOUNDED TALENT. One incredible thing about our students is the amount of performing arts talent they have. Not trying to brag or anything, but we are home to the first collegiate a cappella group to EVER win NBC’s Sing Off as of...
Can you play music without majoring in music?
Nov. 18, 2014—Whether you are a violinist, clarinetist, or tenor who loves Vanderbilt but would like to pursue engineering, psychology, or economics as a career, it is possible for you to be a part of the music program on campus without becoming a performance major at the Blair School of Music, even when you are accepted to a different school!
A Weekend to End All Weekends
Oct. 21, 2014—A prominent 20th century philosopher once said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get". It's also pretty sweet. This weekend, though extraordinary, was not out of the ordinary. Every weekend takes me along for an unexpected ride, one that always manages to showcase many of the diverse facets of Vandy life. Join me as we experience the sights and sounds that this one particular trip took me through.
First Time Honkytonk Line Dancing
Oct. 10, 2014—I’m no fan of country music, I don’t see the big deal in wearing cowboy boots, and I absolutely refuse to say the southern linguistic conundrum of “y’all.” And I’m from Houston! Ironic, isn’t it? Granted, Houston is probably one of the least stereotypically “Southern” cities, since almost every building is fairly new and consists...
Movies + Dancing + Theater = FUN!
Oct. 5, 2014—A week full of Channing Tatum, Garba and Much Ado About Nothing.
It Goes On and On with the Avett Brothers
Sep. 22, 2014—The first time I heard the Avett Brothers, I was sitting in the backseat of a fifteen-passenger van with some other eighth graders on an outdoor summer leadership trip, wondering why in the world my Teva-wearing, quick-dry-pants-sporting, wilderness-loving camp counselors enjoyed listening to twangy singers. Since then, I think that the Avett brothers have stepped out of their yodelling phase but have kept the integrity of their songs. Last weekend, my friend J., who was slightly obsessed with them, and I "saw" them live.
So Nashville: Full Moon Pickin’ Party
Sep. 8, 2014—The finest bluegrass in all the land is found under the full moon. Yes indeed, a pure Tennessee treasure is the Pickin' Party, held in the summer moonlight at the Percy Warner Park.
One Less Problem (With the Quake Lineup)
Jul. 9, 2014—I don’t know about you guys, but where I went to high school, homecoming was a lot of the things — stressful, overblown, anxiety-inducing — a lot of things, but usually not very fun. There was a football game no one cared about, a dance we cared about WAY too much, and weeks worth of...
Final Traditions
May. 6, 2014—As I mentioned in a previous post (better late than never, right?) second semester holds quite a few of my favorite Vanderbilt traditions. Two that I haven't talked about yet are Rites of Spring and the annual Black and Gold game!!
Competitions Galore and Glory!
May. 2, 2014—The month-long hiatus of Blair news is over! It's been busy over here on the Blair side. Just a few weeks ago, Blair students competed in two competitions: the Music Teachers National Association's Divisional Chamber Music Competition and Vanderbilt University's Concerto Competition. Success prevailed!
