I’m Wide Awake
Nov. 12, 2012—This past weekend, I took a vacation. After a hectic week in which I had three midterms and a nine minute speech all within the span of five days, I needed some time off to regain my sanity. Sure, I could have waited a week and relaxed over Thanksgiving Break. But, a better opportunity presented itself.
Fall Break in the Smokies
Oct. 8, 2012—Keeping with my 3 year tradition of spending Fall Break leading an Outdoor Recreation trip to the Smokey Mountains to go backpacking, I headed out this past weekend with a van full of new faces and came back with a van full of new friends. It may sound cheesy, but it’s true. There’s just no...
Hoedown Throwdown
Oct. 3, 2012—Last week, my friend Monica asked me, “Hey, do you want to get off campus? Come to Cru Fall Getaway!” Even though I wasn’t a member of Cru, I was excited hop out of the Vandy Bubble for a weekend and had lots of fun with Capture the Flag, a hoedown, and making new friends!
Hiking and the School Play
Sep. 30, 2012—Yesterday, I went for a lovely hike at Radnor Lake and then came back to campus to see VUT's production of Dead Man's Cell Phone.
Live on the Green
Sep. 28, 2012—Nashville isn’t adoringly nicknamed “Music City” for nothing. The city has a plethora of music venues, outdoor festivals, and up-and-coming bands. Whether you’re in town for a day, a weekend, or 4 years of college, you should be getting a taste of the country, folk, rock, punk, or whatever your ears and your heart desire.
Slack[lin]ing in the Sun
Sep. 26, 2012—Every once in a while, my friends and I in WilSkills will get together and set up a slackline outside of Rand Dining Center to hang out and eat lunch while inviting people to learn how to slackline and also to attend a WilSkills lecture or trip.
TIMAV: Our campus
Sep. 18, 2012—Vanderbilt’s campus is one of those things you have to see to believe. It’s part park, part urban oasis, part university, and part forest infested with crazy squirrels (I’m not kidding). While living in Dakar was an awesome experience, I much prefer waking up to our beautiful lawns, trees, and random assortment of sculptures. It sure beats sandy streets filled with goats, believe me.
Note to self: slow down
Sep. 13, 2012—Four weeks into the semester. By now, most of us are probably already busy taking our first test or handing in that first essay assignment for class. As professors slowly start picking up the pace of the semester by increasing our workload, a lot of us can't help but let the stress accumulate. Anxiety level? Very high. Things on my to-do list for the weekend? Very full.
Parks and Rec
Sep. 10, 2012—This weekend, I took advantage of the BEAUTIFUL weather and decided to experience Nashville's parks. Believe it or not, there are so many parks around here. There are not only hiking trails, water falls, and horseback riding, but also outside amphitheaters, playgrounds and museums.
ORC Staff Training
Sep. 3, 2012—Each semester the Outdoor Recreation Center staff go on a training trip to hone our soft and hard skills in the wilderness. This semester, we had the extreme honor of participating the second ever Adventure Race! It tested our ability to orienteer, use gear, and work as a team to hike and then canoe from...
