Sleepless in Nashville
Dec. 21, 2012—This is the first time all year that I haven't been able to sleep. I should temporarily join Insomniacs Anonymous. Did you know that you could be so well rested that it's a detriment to your sleep pattern? Good, neither did I, until now that is.
Digging a Hole
Dec. 18, 2012—Well, let's just dive in, shall we? As I was mentioning in my last post, the Vanderbilt Orchestra is going to be going on tour to China! We've known about this trip since the summer of 2011, so with the approach of our departure in under a week, I am more excited than for the imminent approach of a musical adventure in a land far, far away!
Three-Eighths
Dec. 18, 2012—Hello one, hello all! It has been a long time since I've posted. Not that I haven't been blogging... it was just a matter of actually publishing my drafts. Ah, well, now that this semester's over and I'm still at Vanderbilt, let me fill you in on a few things and explain why I'm still in warm-weather Nashville.
Music Making
Nov. 22, 2012—This post coming to you fresh from the Yeh kitchen, as Mr. Turkey makes friends with his neighbors Butternut Squash, Carrot, and Potatoes in the Oven. Today I was practicing again. Such is the life. Anyways, I had the strangest feeling: the realization of the complete disconnect among the fingers of my left hand, which tapped the wire strings against the neck of my cello, and my right arm swinging back and forth like a pendulum- right, left, right left- and the noise which was just coming out of the wood. It was so bizarre.
Symphonie Fantastique
Nov. 7, 2012—So what better for Blair kids to do on their Friday night than go to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center for a delightful evening of music? We boarded the bus downtown, and when we arrived, we saw around half of our school there. From the pianists to violists to vocalists to horn players, the Blair School of Music had invaded the Nashville Symphony. Yes, that is what we music majors do to kick off our weekends.
To the Reds!
Oct. 11, 2012—Fall break, I thank you for your timely arrival amidst papers, practicing, and peril from sleep deprivation. On Wednesday, Dmitri and I practically skipped to the BCM to head out of town, loading up with a whopping forty-two other people onto one bus, one mini-van, and four cars to road trip all the way to Cincinnati!
Hoedown Throwdown
Oct. 3, 2012—Last week, my friend Monica asked me, “Hey, do you want to get off campus? Come to Cru Fall Getaway!” Even though I wasn’t a member of Cru, I was excited hop out of the Vandy Bubble for a weekend and had lots of fun with Capture the Flag, a hoedown, and making new friends!
Farm to Fork Dinner
Sep. 26, 2012—I had been raving about the annual Farm to Fork dinner to my friends, checking the Common Place website since the beginning of the year to make sure I didn't miss the RSVP and badgering them all to sign up for this no-caloric-regrets-because-it-is-just-that-good meal.
Rain, Rain, Come Again
Sep. 18, 2012—There it was: the perfect puddle. To jump or not to jump. Also, if you ever need a conversation starter with a Vandy girl, talk about rainboots.
Blair Concert the First
Sep. 17, 2012—I'm not good at estimating, so I'll safely guess between 30 and 8,000 people showed up for Blair's first concert. But actually, Ingram was absolutely packed. Not even when Audra McDonald or the Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet came was there an audience such as this. Apparently, people even had to listen to and watch the concert from the lobby telly, it was so full! Success! People finally realizing and taking advantage of the free Blair concerts!
