Mouth-watering Monell’s
This post is late, but that doesn’t make it any less important. Allow me to tell you of the wonders of Monell’s.
Two Wednesdays ago, around 11am, one of the admissions counselors poked his head into the room where we students work on answering emails, with an invitation to go to Monell’s for lunch in ten minutes with some of the counselors. Torn between saving money and experiencing the Southern deliciousness for the first time, I quickly conferred with my fellow student workers and decided that my bank account could take the hit in the name of biscuits. We jumped up and raced after those headed to lunch to ensure that we wouldn’t be left behind!
Now that the background story is out of the way, let me take the rest of this post to tell you about the heaven that is Monell’s. To sum it up, it’s good old-fashioned Southern food served family style—and it’s all you can eat! We went to the Germantown restaurant, only about a fifteen-minute drive from the OUA. The restaurant is situated in an old house, with big tables and a multitude of lazy Susans gracing each table. The menu is different each day of the week, and you don’t order your food individually—the moment you sit down, the food begins arriving. Since we went on a Wednesday, the menu was pork chops, baked chicken, and fried chicken as well as a multitude of sides, such as biscuits, corn puddin’, green beans, and mashed potatoes, with strawberry shortcake for dessert. It was all incredibly delicious, to say the very least. I am a connoisseur of biscuits in particular, and good gosh these did not disappoint. We all stuffed ourselves silly with the amazing food, and then practically waddled back to the cars for the ride back to the office. Sadly leftovers are not allowed at Monell’s, although after our meal I couldn’t even think of eating period, let alone taking leftovers.
Needless to say, I have not once regretted my decision to go to lunch that day. I don’t get much Southern food at home in California (read: none at all), so I like to take advantage of being in the South and eat it as much as possible!
For your reading pleasure, I leave you with the rules of Monell’s, direct from their website:
“Take as much as you can eat but eat all that you take. We pass the bowls to the left. No cell phones calls allowed at the tables during dinner. If you take up a chair, you will be charged.”
