Thanksgiving Abroad
To be honest, Thanksgiving isn’t a big deal for me, as a holiday. Spending time with my family and friends who visit definitely makes it that much more important, and lots of food is delicious. However, I will admit, not being with my family for a holiday which I am guaranteed time with my family is a bit odd.
That’s not a problem, though! :D Fortunately for me, I live with three other people in my apartment, all from the United States (thanks to API), and we also have two other people in the neighboring apartment. From day one, essentially, we decided we would all have Thanksgiving dinner together! And I promised my friend, Monika, that I would bake a pumpkin pie!
Awkwardly enough, that was also the weekend that we traveled to Budapest, Hungary, which is super exciting! However, that complicated issues in finding times to eat as a group. Therefore, we decided upon a Thanksgiving lunch. Kasia and Gosia worked on the turkey cakes (like potato pancakes, but with turkey…), since we have far too small of an oven to really make a turkey. Nate, Monika, and I focused on the pumpkin. Mind you: there is no canned pumpkin, canned evaporated milk, or ground cloves, so therefore the process becomes arduously longer. Although, the preparation of the pumpkin pie was wonderful fun, and I’ll be honest: the filling was delicious!
There wasn’t even that much food, too! We couldn’t make too much food, because we’re traveling over the weekend, and we hardly have the supplies. Between our two kitchens, we kept on running out of utensils and plates, and we had to continuously wash things to use them again. Although, this really does remind me of back home for big holidays when we all pitch in to help out in making endless food. Without a doubt, our efforts were a great success, and our Thanksgiving was wonderful. <3
Happy Belated Thanksgiving to everyone! (: I’m sure all of the Vandy students had a great week of rest!
