To Those Who Work, I Salute You
Finding a job is scary.
Really scary.
But finding an internship, well, I believe that’s scarier.
Internships are one of the best ways to get your foot in the door and learn the ins and outs of the industry of your choice. In this day and age, internships are nearly essential to success, especially if you plan to go into business (i.e. me).
‘Tis the season that young intelligent people from all across the nation start competing for unpaid (or lowly paid) jobs, and the stakes are high! I am no exception. I have been slaving over my resume and spending many hours sorting through internships trying to put my best foot forward in applying for internships I would love to have.
Luckily, Vanderbilt takes so much of my anxiety away. First of all, coming from a college like Vanderbilt does wonders in the field of internships. A name like Vanderbilt carries a good deal of weight, and it feels so good to have people respect the school you come from in the application process.
Besides that, Vanderbilt makes resume building a breeze! The Center for Student Professional Development works hard to prepare students for entering into the field of their choice, whether it be an internship or post-graduate career. One way in which they do that is resume assistance. Their website gives incredible and modern advice, as well as access to an online resume builder that anyone with a Vanderbilt email address can use FOR FREEEEEEE! Anyone who has ever paid to use a resume builder knows the extreme value of that.
After you think you’ve got your resume down, you can bring it into the Center and they will read over it, give you advice, and help match your with potential internships based on your interests! Essentially, the act as career counselors, but extremely involved and helpful ones who have access to every class you’ve ever taken.
I have never felt more prepared to apply for internships in my life. I am conducting interviews with confidence, and I am feeling good about my prospects, and none of this would have been possible if it were not for the Center!
It’s just one more thing that makes Vanderbilt is awesome.
