Exit/In Produces Ridiculous Dance Moves
I am a live music junkie. We’re talking straight up obsession here. It doesn’t matter if it’s that underground indie band no one’s ever heard of or a reunion tour for that 60’s one-hit-wonder, I’ll go to the show, and I’ll love every second of it. Just give me a beat, and I’ll break it down. Give me a bass, and I’ll drop it. Give me a tune, and I’ll…well, you get the point.
So it should come as no surprise that I’m really in my element here in Nashville. I have mapped out routes to all of the greatest local venues (Marathon Music Works, Ryman Auditorium, Mercy Lounge…this list goes on for a while). There’s one spot, however, that I frequent more than any other.
Located on Elliston Place, less than a mile from campus, Exit/In has to be the most convenient venue for Vandy students, but the location is really just an added bonus. The blacked out building may look a little shady from the outside, but that’s really just a part of that Exit/In charm. It’s a tiny venue, only holding about 500 patrons, but that just means you’re going to be right in the faces of whatever fantastic act you’re seeing that night.
There’s a certain magic to Exit/In that’s brought in unbelievable names since the venue opened in 1971. Everyone from Johnny Cash, Ben Folds, and Kenny Chesney to Cheech and Chong, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Goo Goo Dolls have graced the small stage at Exit/In.
With ticket prices averaging around $12 and the kind of variety that will help you rope in even the most reluctant friend to catching a concert with you, it’s easy to find yourself Exit/In-ing quite often.
I’ve only been on campus for two months, but I’ve already racked up four Exit/In wrist stamps. So far I’ve seen the lo-fi rockabilly artist Dirty Beaches, the indie pop violinist Kishi Bashi, the rock revival band The Orwells with the garage punk band Fidlar, and, my personal favorite, the legendary songwriter Daniel Johnston.
Okay. So it’s cheap, there are great bands, and you can walk there from campus. I feel like if you had any more of a reason to go to Exit/In you’d already be there by now.
