Storage Wars

Posted by on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 in General Information, Nashville, Summer.

There is a ton to do at the end of every year to move out! I feel like I never realize how much stuff I have until it’s all packed in boxes and there is barely any space in my room…Last year my parents drove down to bring all my stuff home. After we could barely fit it all in our mini-van, my mom said next summer I would be flying home. As the end of the semester rolled around, my dad, sensing my high stress level from finals, decided to come down for the weekend to help me pack up. On top of being incredibly helpful, it was so nice to see him since I hadn’t seen him since January!

Our storage unit!

Honestly, my experience with storage units was limited to watching storage wars, so I didn’t know much when I knew I had to find storage. Luckily, the internet is full of information! The first part of packing happens weeks earlier with picking out a storage unit. I got a 5×10 unit that I’m splitting with three other girls. Choosing the size of the storage unit was relatively easy since they showed examples of how much stuff could fit in each. Plus, when I went to rent it, she let me check it out to make sure it was enough space. I tried picking a storage facility that was close to campus, relatively cheap, and had decent security. Having it close to campus makes it much more convenient since most likely you won’t be able to fit everything in the car the first time. Some places require that you pay the first month to reserve a unit, but the place I rented with called The Warehouse didn’t, which was nice. I also looked for a unit that didn’t require that you take the stairs to get to it (stairs aren’t that fun with really heavy boxes). Renting the unit itself didn’t require that much paperwork, and soon we were busy moving boxes. Another key thing to remember was to bring a lock since those aren’t generally provided for free.

On top of storing most of my stuff and my bike in Nashville, I had to ship a few boxes of clothes home (I have a tendency to over pack oops). I’m so glad my dad was here to help me pack  and move everything and help with my first self-storage experience!
