Winter Break Travels

Posted by on Friday, January 4, 2013 in Family, General Information, Winter Break.

I cannot believe that winter break is almost over and I am less than a week away from the start of classes. It seems like this break in particular has flown by. I spent the first week eating mass amounts of ice cream while watching lots of TV show marathons because I got my wisdom teeth removed. And this past week I spent in New York City with my family!

We left on Christmas Day and our Christmas dinner was not homemade for the first time ever. We went to one of the only places open, a diner that served Chinese food and also doubled as an ice cream parlor. It was a strange, but delicious combination, to say the least. The next day we went to the Museum of Modern Art. It was cool to see some of the more famous paintings like the Scream and Starry Night. But when one of the pieces was literally a tape measure with rocks on it on the ground, I was a skeptic.

My sister and I in NYC!

On one of the days we went on a boat tour of the city and got to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the city skyline from the water. I was lucky to have visited a couple of weeks before Hurricane Sandy in October because they said that Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty wouldn’t be open to the public for up to six months because of the storm. We also saw the effects of the storm when the restaurant we picked for lunch that was a couple blocks from the docks was closed due to structural damage.

No lunch here!

We also went to a Brooklyn Nets game, an Off-Broadway play, walked through Times Square two days before the ball dropped (the stages and barricades were already set up), saw the tree at Rockefeller Center, and went to a delicious bakery in Little Italy. While we were in town on the eve of the 31st, my family was entirely against the idea of standing outside for a couple of hours in the cold with 1 million other people in Times Square. So, we watched the ball drop on TV.

The Brooklyn Nets game!

Needless to say, I had a wonderful vacation with my family and I can’t wait for another semester at Vandy to start!
