A Night at the Symphony
Last semester one of my classmates told me about SoundCheck, a program offered through the Nashville Symphony that offers $10 tickets to select performances for college students. I decided to try it out this semester, since I had also heard from many of my friends that the Nashville Symphony is full of amazingly talented musicians. So, last week I got together with some of my friends to order tickets, and last night we headed downtown for a lovely evening of classical music!
Before going downtown we enjoyed a nice dinner at Bread & Co, one of the many restaurants that is a part of the Taste of Nashville program. Restaurants who participate in Taste of Nashville offer the ability for students to use their “Meal Money” there. Going to Bread & Co was nice because it meant we got to go out to dinner in our fancy outfits, but we didn’t have to break the bank doing so.
When we got to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, which is less than a 10 minute drive from campus, we were all in awe of how beautiful it was. There is an outdoor courtyard where you can sit and enjoy the weather, and the symphony hall itself is amazing. You have a great view of the orchestra no matter where you are seated, and the acoustics are flawless. In terms of the actual performance, I was blown away. The orchestra performed Symphony Fantastique, some Maya Angelou poems set to music, and Rachmaninoff piano concerto. I was enthralled the whole time and amazed by the sheer talent exhibited by the musicians.
While I initially wasn’t sure if the symphony was something I would enjoy, it proved to be a great way for me to spend my Thursday night. I loved having an excuse to dress up fancy, got out to dinner with my friends, and enjoy some beautiful music. I had a great time at my first symphony performance, and I hope to attend more Nashville Symphony performances in the future!
