The Wonder of Communication

Posted by on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 in Academics, Exams, Professors.

What do I mean by “The Wonder of Communication?” Well, this is actually something that many of my blog posts ultimately conclude with. Talking to your professors. Developing connections. Contacts. Trust. Why is this important, you ask?

Quite simply, your professors will be the way you can connect to the world. They will write your references to jobs, to internships, to anything you want to do. They will be able to recommend you to their colleagues, and they will help you however they can so long as you reach out to them. Professors LOVE students who reach out.

More importantly, though, if you talk to your professors from day one, even in a one hundred person course, they will learn who you are (and honestly, how is that not cool, being recognized among dozens?). They will see that you take their course, their study, and them, seriously. This is important if you have any serious problems that come up.

In my case, I will be having a major surgery this semester. First day of class, I laid the information on my professors, and fortunately, they were all super understanding. Then, I determined the day I would like to have my surgery in order to recover before next semester, and this day would be well before exams. However, thanks to my communication with them from day one, they understood and agreed to hold exams earlier for me.

Please remember that college (I would say) needs to be a system of support away from home, and your professors can be another support group for you. They have many words of wisdom. So communicate with them, and they will work with you if you need help. As for me, my surgery, and school? Well, I’ll explain in a later post how it is possible to still complete Vanderbilt despite any major obstacles that might arise. :) Trust me, you can do it!
