Best (Convenient) Off Campus Study Spots
Not to slam the lovely Vanderbilt libraries, but every once in a while, a student needs a change of scenery (whether they know it or not). I mean, have you SEEN the cages in upstairs Central? And who can spend hour upon painful hour in Stevenson without staring at the nearest emergency exit?
Fear not, the beauty of Nashville (specifically the area around campus) is that there are countless locations to take your laptop and soak in the coffee shop vibes. Who knows? The refreshing energy and surroundings could inspire you. Thank me later.
For starters, Fido is a hip restaurant and coffee shop located near Vanderbilt Commons. Not only do they have an extensive menu (ALL DAY BREAKFAST, PEOPLE), but they also have bomb coffee drinks. There are a ton of windows and open tables to plug in and spend a couple hours studying. My only warning is that they have a tendency to shut off internet on the weekends, so keep that in mind before making the trek.
If you’re close to Commons, Edgehill Café is a super convenient option (about a ten minute walk). It has an extensive drink menu, delicious food, and a brightly lit study atmosphere. I’ve gotten some really great drinks and meals while studying here, and I highly recommend it to plop down with your laptop for a couple of hours.
To find a more comfy study spot, check out Atmology on West End. I’m still not over the fact that it took me until sophomore year to try their acai bowl and avocado toast. Don’t go if you’re low on sleep, because the pillow rooms are sure to lull you into a deep slumber. This restaurant is a great spot for group meetings or just plain relaxation.
If you have a car or want to get a little further from the bubble, Frothy Monkey on 12 South is a great option. They have great breakfast, coffee, and a ton of open space. Coming here definitely is a change from Vanderbilt’s campus and will make you feel completely immersed in the Nashville scene.
To those who are always on Commons but can’t bear the lack of tables at the 21st avenue Starbucks or hustle and bustle of Commons Center, J & J’s Market and Café is a hidden gem. It’s right by Noshville and is a bit of a walk, but this studious spot is perfect for writing a paper or bringing some notes. It’s a unique layout, but the market is definitely worth the walk.
Lastly, to try something COMPLETELY new, keep your eye on Three Brothers Coffee, which recently opened on West End. For the Vandy students/Nashvillian experts who have already hit up the previously mentioned spots, Three Brothers is uncharted territory. I have yet to try it, but it’s the next on my list and should be on yours too.
