Feasting: Commence!
The Macy’s Parade is over, the grandparents have arrived, and food preparations are in high gear. The oven has been turned on for the homestretch –
–This is where I suddenly break to comment that a Kohl’s advertisement just came on to the modified strains of Rebecca Black’s “Friday.” Why is that okay? –
-of the turkey’s journey to my stomach. More delicious, though, than the visions of cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes currently occupying my attention is the sound of family in the kitchen.
Being home, seeing friends I’ve missed since August, and having my family around me this morning are all easy reminders of why we celebrate Thanksgiving. I am incredibly thankful for my parents and grandparents, and for the friends I’ve tried to keep in touch with. This year, though, I also want to emphasize how thankful I am for the new friends I’ve made. People I didn’t know at all a year and a half ago have very profoundly touched my life and have come to be very important to me. Vanderbilt, despite all its difficulties and my propensity to complain about its failings, has given me a wealth of opportunities, the chance to explore things outside my comfort zone, and a new home with a new family. Today I am thankful for all of these things – The music of the Melodores, the brotherhood-by-shared-misery of ROTC, the opportunities I’m given by the School of Engineering, and the friends I never would have found without my school.
Thanks, Vanderbilt!
