Homework: Go to a Concert
I am taking an awesome class this semester! History of Rock Music. Not only is it really fun and interesting but it also counts as part of my Liberal Arts requirements. In class we talk about specific artists ranging from the 1950s to current times including Little Richard, Elvis, Otis Redding, Grateful Dead, Lynard Skynard, Elton John, U2, AC/DC, DMB, and even Britney Spears. After discussing their influences, style, and personal stories we will listen to one of their songs which will be our focus for that artist. We also talk about the trends in music styles, culture of the times, and what else was going on in the world then that inspired the music. This class is a great way to blend my love of music with a culture history lesson while getting class credit. It is a fairly large class held in the Cinema in Sarratt Student Center but with our professor and two TA’s (teaching assistants) I am able to get all of my questions answered and still feel involved in the class.
One of our assignments is to attend a rock concert of our choice during the semester and write about it! How cool is that? Since our teacher is a recording artist herself and wife to a former Black Crows member she is a huge proponent of getting us out into the Nashville live music scene to experience it for ourselves. There are so many places in Nashville to hear live music, many that I regret I haven’t even taken advantage of yet. Our professor is so helpful in suggesting places to go and bands to see, some that I have heard of and some that I haven’t. I have yet to attend my concert for class yet, but will fill all of you readers in once I do!
