The Life of an Intramural Soccer Player
Before coming to college, I was in the best shape of my life. For me, anyways. I played travel soccer for 13 years and 4 years of varsity high school before officially retiring upon my arrival at Vanderbilt. Life was great…until the “Freshman 15” rumors started to harass a very fitness-conscious brain. I had been putting off joining an intramural team for a while for one reason or another.
“What if I don’t know anyone?” “I am TOO out of shape!” “ I haven’t touched a ball in AGES!”
Finally, via a forwarded email from my friend and fellow blogger Jae Maeng, opportunity came knocking. I dusted off my boots, fixed my attitude, and took the field.
Intramural sports may not be as intense as playing a club or varsity sport, but the experience has proven to be a great one. I never thought I’d miss sprinting/jogging up and down a huge field, but getting the chance to play once again brought back the spark. It’s been great meeting tons of new people, de-stressing after a packed week, and just having fun doing something I enjoy! One of the best parts of playing, aside from interacting with new people, is do-able commitment level it entails. What is do-able exactly? If you are able to play in every game, super! If you have a busy week and can’t make it to a game or two, no problem! Less stress= more fun!
The wonderful people I have met and the competitive –yet- fun atmosphere has kept me in the game week after week, rejuvenating my spirits and prolonging the war against the fictional yet menacing Freshman 15. Take the field (or court) and get in the game at Vandy!
