The PREP Program

Posted by on Sunday, April 1, 2012 in College Life, Service, Vanderbilt Internships.

This semester, I have had the opportunity to intern at the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health through the PREP Program offered by the Office of Active Citizenship and Service.

PREP provides sophomores and juniors the chance to participate in leadership development seminars in the fall semester and a service internship in the spring semester. When I first heard about the PREP program, I was very excited to have the opportunity to gain first hand experience in the non-profit sector, as I am considering pursuing a career in this domain. The speakers in the fall were all very engaging and relevant to my future career aspirations. When the time came to pick an internship, the coordinators of the program brought representatives from lots of prominent non-profits in the Nashville community to campus for an internship fair. I really enjoyed hearing about the admirable work of the various organizations. Ultimately, I accepted a position at the Vanderbilt Institute for Global Health as I am very interested in international development.

I have greatly enjoyed my internship. I work in the refugee outreach department. One of the other interns and I meet with a Burmese refugee family and help them with with the transition to life in Nashville. Additionally, we write lesson plans for ESL classes. I have learned so much about the experiences of refugees. I highly recommend the PREP program to any sophomores or juniors. For any potential Vanderbilt students, the PREP program is one of the many ways to get involved with the Nashville community offered at Vandy.
