A Freshman in Disguise: Move Crew 2011
If you ask any undergraduate student about the day he or she first moved to college, he or she can give you a clear account of that eventful day. Mainly, this is due to the excitement, anticipation, and possibly fears of moving into a new home. However, if you ask a Vanderbilt student, all the students remember move in day because of Move Crew.
Having the Move Crew help you move into the Commons is an authentic Vanderbilt freshmen experience. However, this was not the case for me. On Move-In Day, I was a member of the Move Crew. I participated in the Spirit of Gold Marching Band this past fall, so I had moved onto campus early for summer rehearsals. I had been on campus for about four days before Move-In Day, and I was anticipating the arrival of the rest of the Class of 2015.
Initially, I was not very thrilled about having to participate in the Move Crew. Usually, upperclassmen students volunteer for Move Crew; for band members participation is mandatory. I had been waking up early the whole week for morning rehearsal, and now I was supposed to wake up even EARLIER on freshman Move-In day on Saturday. However, my perspective changed as soon as the first students started to arrive on campus. The environment was so lively, magical even. Watching the faces of freshmen and their families’ light up when the Move Crew came to help them was amazing. I got to meet a lot of students, both freshmen and upperclassmen, and continue to strengthen my new friendships with members of the band. Vanderbilt has a truly unique way of welcoming its new students to campus, and I am proud to say that I was a part of this unforgettable experience. Next year, I will be more than enthusiastic to be involved in the Move Crew. After all, who can turn down a free breakfast, a free T-shirt, and a killer workout?
