Life After Vanderbilt…
On Thursday the Blair School of Music held a 1-hour career seminar where Vanderbilt’s career center visited to encourage us to start thinking about planning out a career path so we can make our time spent working in college a deliberate choice that is expedient toward our life goals.
READ BELOW to find out more about Vanderbilt’s awesome connections to some of the biggest names/labels/studios in the music world.
We split up by grade and went to separate rooms to meet and discuss specific options. We got a few handouts to outline some general music career paths, prompt some thought on our career
path and even map out a network of friends, colleagues and professors we already know that can help us meet the right people in our industry of choice.
I was very impressed with how interested the career center was in hearing our individual aspirations. Luckily the class sizes at Blair allowed all that wanted to speak up and share to do so. I decided to share my aspirations for a variety of reasons, but mainly because I know that Blair provides us with a classical music education and I was interested if there was any way that I could cross over into the pop music world through any connections in Blair. To my surprise, one of the advising professors informed me that there were at least 7 professors in Blair that have connections with studios and/or record labels in town, as they record and perform in the pop realm on a regular basis. The professor even offered on the spot to do an independent study with me and help me with an individual path toward my dream of becoming a traveling recording artist. This was inspiring to me on a variety of levels, because now I may be able to form a connection to share my passion with the rest of the world like I have always wanted to, thanks to the resources we have here at Vanderbilt.
