7th Annual Scene & Heard Fashion Show
Even though I didn’t make it to Mardi Gras this year, I got my fix of beignets and beads. The 7th Annual Scene & Heard Fashion Show Mardi Gras theme gave me my New Orleans fix for the season.
To give you a little background.. The Vanderbilt Public Relations Society puts on a philanthropic fashion show in the Student Life Center every year featuring different Nashville designers. All proceeds go to The Little Pantry That Could, a nonprofit organization that helps the Nashville homeless community. Every year, the designers, theme, and charity change, making each show unique. All the food and baked goods are donated from local shops around Nashville.
Nashvillians, Vanderbilt students, fashion lovers, philanthropy supporters, and more come to the show; it’s definitely much bigger than a campus event. Not only does it provide amazing exposure for the designers, but it raises money for a great cause.
I first heard about VPR when I interviewed the exec board for a Hustler piece I wrote last year. The team was a group of polished, laid back, friendly people that I instantly enjoyed speaking with. I never really considered a career in Public Relations until my sophomore year. It seemed like the perfect way to incorporate my love for writing with my interest in business and communicative strategy. This semester, I decided to join The Vanderbilt Public Relations Society, and I couldn’t be happier that I did.
From choosing the fashion show music, casting the models, budgeting the show’s expenses, shooting promos, and contacting designers, Vanderbilt PR has their hands in a ton of tasks before the show. Although the show ran smoothly to all that watched, months and months of planning preceded the February 21st show.
Working on VPR has taught me many things, but here are the two most important:

It is never too late to join a new activity that interests you. The odds are, the organization will welcome an excited new member. Even if you’re not sure you know a ton about the activity, throw yourself into it and challenge yourself. Have fun with it.

Public Relations, and really any event throwing organization, is a strenuous, detail oriented industry. As hard and last minute as the work can be, the end result is always worth it.
With hundreds of clubs and organizations on campus, finding one like the Vanderbilt Public Relations Society (even late in the game) can change your Vanderbilt experience and open a new career path for you.
