I Scream For Ice Cream
April 8th is Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day (aka the greatest day of the year).
Coming from a small town in Kentucky that doesn’t happen to have a Ben & Jerry’s, I had never experienced free cone day. So I was more than excited to wait in a nearly endless line to experience the magic of free cone day.
I was on my way to join the line that extended nearly two blocks when I got a call from my friend Jordan. She told me that she was on her way to Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital to volunteer at the Ben & Jerry’s there because Free Cone Day can get kind of overwhelming, and Ben & Jerry’s wanted everyone at the hospital to be served. I thought this sounded like a top-notch opportunity, so I tagged along.
It was an amazing experience! We were stationed at a booth that provided free toppings for your free cone, and most of the people who came by were kids who had brothers or sisters in the hospital. You could see that free ice cream was a real highlight to their days. Then again, when doesn’t ice cream brighten your day? We also had several doctors and surgeons come by and partake in the sprinkles and hot fudge. You could tell this was truly a day to celebrate.
At our free topping station, we also took up donations for Project Opportunity, which provides job training and opportunities for people living with developmental disabilities. The really cool thing about Free Cone Day is the fact that each participating Ben & Jerry’s partners with a charity in the community to promote awareness and raise money for the cause.
It was a great day and a great experience, and I can’t wait until April 8th rolls around again!
Love and free ice cream!
