Late Night Study Sessions

Posted by on Thursday, March 3, 2011 in Academics, Economics, General Information, Spring Break, Student Life.

This week is the last week before Spring Break!  Of course, you know what that means.  Professors have decided to cram as many tests, papers, and homework assignments into these last few days as possible.  Nearly everyone I know is losing their mind, cramming in those last tidbits of information.  I guess this will make the break even more worth it?  We’ll see…

My Econ class is slowly killing me.  First of all, the class is at 8 AM (bad decision.  Avoid at all costs.), which was unfortunately unavoidable.  I’m lucky, though, that many of my friends had the same bad luck, so I have lots of people with whom to complain!  After having had a monster test last Thursday, our professor decided it would be good to have an assignment due today (Thursday), because of course we have nothing else to do but learn economics.

The professor encourages us to work in groups in order to learn the most.  I know what you’re thinking: “Groups?  Sorry, I work better alone.”  I feel exactly the same way.  I am pretty sociable, but I like things done my way, so I was not too excited about this groups idea.  One of my friends asked me to work with her, and I felt bad saying no, so I agreed.

We meet the night before the assignment is due (procrastinators, I know) in Rand and spend the night solving problems and writing out long answers.  Each time we meet, our group grows larger.  Someone inevitably wanders past our table, sees what we are working on, and joins in.  This system has actually been really helpful.  Although it takes me way longer to get stuff done, I actually understand what we are doing.  I am able to get help from the others who understand certain things better than me.  Plus, I retain my sanity, which is always a good thing.

Were it not for these late night study groups, I don’t know where I’d be.  I certainly would not be doing as well in this class as I am now.
