What I’m Listening To
Inspired by the Admissions Officers, I’m writing about some great music I’ve been listening to lately.
- “Days Are Gone” by Haim – One of my friends saw this band at Bonnaroo and we’ve both been obsessed with them ever since. Haim (rhymes with “time”) is a band of three sisters from L.A. who all play guitar, bass, drums, keyboard…this list goes on and on. This is their first ever full-length album and it doesn’t disappoint. I usually listen to it all the way through because there aren’t any weak tracks.
Highlights: The Wire, Days Are Gone, Let Me Go
- “Pure Heroine” by Lorde – By now you’ve probably heard the song “Royals” by Lorde. She’s the youngest artist (16 years old) to top the Billboard charts in 26 years. This is also her first album and it’s a great chill, fun mix of songs. Her songs are not as fast-paced as Haim’s, but her lyrics are pretty impressive for a 16-year-old.
Highlights: White Teeth Teens, Team, Ribs
- “Bangerz” by Miley Cyrus – This one came out two days ago, so I haven’t listened to it quite as much, but I wanted to give it a try since I used to love Miley so much (no shame…you need to see her version of “Jolene“). I get the impression that this album is a little too hip hop for me but I will proudly say I love the song “Wrecking Ball.” Yes, the video is absurd but the lyrics describe failed relationships pretty perfectly, and the song just sounds so pretty.
Highlights: Wrecking Ball, Drive, #GETITRIGHT
- “Magpie and The Dandelion” by the Avett Brothers – This album is not technically out yet, but it is being streamed by NPR right now. I haven’t had time to listen to it yet, but if it sounds like anything else Avett has done, then I’m sure it’s great!
So those are a few favorites of mine right now! What are y’all listening to?
