Apartment Time! — A Blank Canvas
Vanderbilt generally likes its students to live on campus all 4 years because of the sense of community, but seniors (and this year juniors and sophomores because of the construction of the new Kissam College Halls) are allowed to apply to live off campus. This past weekend, I moved into my new apartment and I am super excited to make it home!
Luckily for us students, there is plenty of housing a stone’s throw away from campus. My apartment is literally just across the street from the Admissions Building. The catch? — you have to really look for it. There are places in all price ranges and with all types of layouts. My suggestion? — talk to upperclassmen on campus and figure out where they live or have had friends live. That’s how I found my apartment and found out about all the others! Plus it’s easier to get a lease if it’s kind of passed down to you from the previous residents =)
To name a few complexes that Vandy students use…Westboro, The Village, and Wesley…but it seems like this summer there is also a lot of construction around Vanderbilt and perhaps one of them will turn into a new apartment building!
Moving into an apartment is much like moving into any of the dorms on campus, but without furniture (in my case, anyways). That’s the weird part. I’m sharing the apartment with one of my good friends and she is bringing some of the stuff, so while I’m here this summer I only have about the half the furniture and supplies that we’ll have during the school year. It feels pretty empty, but I’m sure it will fill up soon! We’ve been checking out craftgawker and other DIY sites to find decorative projects for our new home.
Check out how it all started and later I’ll put up the final result!
