Editors Note: Take Two
So my first editor’s note came when I found out I would be co-editor in chief of Inside ‘Dores with Ann next year, but with newspaper content editor applications submitted and evaluated, I have a new editorial position to add to the list! Next year I’ll be serving as The Hustler’s Life Editor, and after two years on Life staff I couldn’t be more excited about getting to shape the direction of the section and work more closely with the editorial board and writing staff (AND GET PAID, WHO KNEW I’D SEE THE DAY?!)!
Writing for the paper isn’t the most glamorous thing I do (hanging backstage with 2 Chainz and the rest of Music Group kinda has it beat… more on that and the rest of this year’s Rites later, though!) and doesn’t always work around my schedule (deadlines for print are a little less lax than the ‘blog-whenever’ policy we have going on at Inside ‘Dores), but seeing my byline is so so SO gratifying, and having friends, acquaintances, and even professors (hi Professor Goodyear!) read and compliment your work is such a fun bonus!
Vanderbilt’s newspaper is really special in that there are hardly any barriers to entry for people that are interested. Whether you’re like me and have been writing for school papers since you were 15, or you just saw The Hustler at the activities fair during the first week of school and thought it could be a cool thing to try out, the paper has a place for you. The same issue will have things written by seasoned senior reporters and freshmen who came to a meeting just to see what The Hustler is all about. And it’s not just freshmen who do that… a few of my friends have been known to get curious and tag along with me too. But next year, I’ll be running those meetings, so if you think you could like writing for the paper or just wanna pop in and say hey, shoot me an email and get in on the fun (and baked goods, just in case you need some extra incentive)!!! In the meantime, I got to chat with the lead singer of the Mowgli’s, one of the bands I was most excited about for Rites of Spring, the other day (Life reporter perks, you guys! This could be you!) and got one of my favorite interviews from this year! Check it out over here.
