The Chosen One
On the 17th of January 2014, Vanderbilt Football named Derek Mason as the 28th Head Coach of Vanderbilt Football. With this hire, Vanderbilt started the Mason era and the campus is buzzing with high hopes and lifted spirit.
Personally, I think that this was a great hire and that Derek Mason will take us to the promised land (the National Championship Game). David Williams and Chancellor Zeppos did a great job in finding the correct person to take over the reigns for Vanderbilt. It felt like a long process especially with National Signing Day slowly creeping upon and our recruiting class falling apart in front of us. But, in the end, everything was okay as Derek Mason was announced as our shiny, new Head Coach.
So, what is there to know about our new Head Coach? Well, Mason was the Defensive Coordinator for Stanford where he became a Finalist for the Broyles Award, an award given to the top assistant coach in college football. He is a native of Phoenix, Arizona and played cornerback in college at Northern Arizona. Now, to the more important things: Derek Mason’s wife is Leighanne and he has two daughters: Makenzie and Sydney.
With Derek Mason at the helm, we can hope that he will lead us to the top of the SEC East, that he can lead us to become the Stanford of the South where we can keep our status of Academic Powerhouse while being able to compete in our conference.
We now start a new era of Vanderbilt Football and Derek Mason is the right man to continue our winning ways.
