Just the Break I Needed
I spent this past week in bright and beautiful Miami Beach. Although it was a little colder than usual (about 20 degrees below average), the sun was out and my family was there. Spring break is the only real break we get during the semester and although many of my adventurous peers participated in service trips and fun getaways, I knew that I needed some family time to make it through the semester.
When I applied to school, I knew that I had to get away. I wanted to see the world and grow up and become independent and learn how to do laundry, (just kidding, I learned how to do laundry when I was 16). I wanted to go all the way to California, but my parents begged me to stay east of the Mississippi River. It seemed like a fair compromise to me, as Vanderbilt was my first choice anyway.
I have learned a lot in my time here, but I was not expecting to learn how much I love spending time with my family. I think that going away for undergrad has been extremely beneficial for my relationships with not only my mom, dad, and sister, but also with my grandparents and cousins. I guess they kind of treat me like a princess when I’m home, (Thanks for the Kindle, Baba and GP!!). They claim that it is because I am never home, but I know it is because I am the favorite daughter, sister, cousin etc. I love spending time with all of them and even though they are a little nuts (see pictures below), I owe my success to them. This week, they reminded me of the simple things. The reminded me to live a balanced lifestyle, save room for dessert, and dance like everybody’s watching because most likely you can make them laugh.
I am so happy to be back at school. These next six weeks are going to be amazing! Also, they are the last six weeks that I don’t have to share Vanderbilt with my annoying younger sister. Hey, in case you haven’t heard, my sister Brittany is the Newest Commodore on the Block. Hit her up. She’s really into social media. Oh, and she is way cooler than I am.
