Art in the Vandy Bubble

I am not creative or artistic in any way. But, that’s ok! I can still get my fill of the performing arts here on campus. This weekend, I saw Taming of the Shrew, played Drag Queen Bingo and saw Later That Same Evening.

I kicked off my weekend with Vanderbilt University Theater’s production of Taming of the Shrew. One of the leads was played by a boy in my Contemporary American Drama class, so I went not only to support him, but also because I was so curious to see him in his element. He actually guest lectured about acting for a class period a few weeks ago, and it was awesome to finally be able to understand his point of view. I really enjoyed the play. It stayed true to Shakespearian dialogue, but the costumes were modernized and the cast was hilarious.

On Saturday, VPB hosted Drag Queen Bingo. This event featured Veronika Electronika and it served as a late-night alcohol free program to highlight the new space in Rand Hall. I worked the event, but I did get to enjoy the show. Veronika performed between Bingo rounds and had four costume changes! It was so much fun and we had a great turn out.

Finally, on Sunday, I went to Vanderbilt Opera Theater’s presentation of Later That Same Evening. This opera gives life to a few of Edward Hopper’s paintings. This was actually my first opera experience and it was great! This contemporary productions featured one of my great friends, Caroline. The costumes and set were exquisite and the singing was all fantastic. I also enjoyed watching the orchestra in the pit.

All in all, I had a great weekend. With only two days until I am home for Thanksgiving break, I now have so many inspiring cultural tidbits to share with my family!
