Gulf Shores
Fall break is just around the corner–literally, it’s tomorrow–and I’m getting really excited to head down to Gulf Shores, AL!
Even though I’m a junior, this is my first time going somewhere other than home for fall break. Although I’ve driven through Alabama before on the way to Vanderbilt formals the past few springs, I can’t say I’ve seen anything more than a rest stop or two. This time, however, we’re headed down to the beach! It’s sort of a Vanderbilt fall break tradition.
We were trying to figure out whether or not there was any beach closer to Nashville, but this is it. Our destination is about 8 hours away from campus–straight down for about 411 miles on I-65. As far as I know, there are a ton of people headed down for this four day weekend; in fact, some have already left! Fraternities who have fall break houses include: ATO, AEPi, Beta, DKE, Kappa Sig, SAE, and Sig Chi.
The way it works is either fraternities, sororities, or groups of friends rent a beach house for the weekend and fill it up with about 20 people or so. The trick is to get there early because they usually over book the houses with people so there aren’t enough beds for everyone. This is a very touristy area so there are plenty of furnished rental houses that are willing to rent to students specifically for this type of long weekend. I’ve been told that the beaches are beautiful and the town is fun and touristy–perfect for a college weekend. It’s a great option for a cheap, chill weekend of fun with your peers!
Everyone always comes back sporting tanks or other accessories with “GULF SHORES” plastered in big, neon letters all over. So I’m definitely going to be on the lookout to purchase one of my own!
