I’m Still in Peru, and Loving It!
Hello again from Lima! This weekend was my last in Peru, as I return home this Friday night. This weekend, we celebrated Peruvian independence day and a small group of us volunteers decided to travel down to the Peruvian desert oasis called Huacachina.Huacachina is located about 4 hours south of Lima in a province called Ica. It is a lagoon in the middle of the desert which is heavily traversed by backpackers and native Peruvians alike. As it is winter in this half of the world, my weekend getaway to Huacachina was the perfect escape. I got just enough sun to get me through the week.
I wasn’t really planning on traveling around Peru when I was planning my trip, mostly because I didn’t know that there would be other volunteers. The trip was great not only because I got to bond with the other volunteers, but also because I had some time to reflect on the past two weeks.
I have met amazing people, eaten incredible food and traveled to the middle of the desert, but most importantly, I have been privileged to be completely immersed in Peruvian culture. Between my homestay and my work in a free medical clinic, I have gotten to know all sorts of Peruvians and about the different ways of life here. I have also been practicing my Spanish quite a bit- so much, actually, that I have even started to dream in Spanish!
Time flies and I will be home so soon. For now, I suppose I should sign off and enjoy the rest of my time here!
