Nick Flynn at Vanderbilt
It’s not every day you get to see an unreleased trailer for an upcoming movie with Robert De Niro, but Thursday happened to be one of those days.
Author Nick Flynn has written several collections of poetry, his newest being “The Captain Asks for a Show of Hands”. I had read this previously for a class last semester, when Flynn was originally scheduled to come read as part of the Gertrude & Harold Writing Vanderbilt Visiting Writers Series. However, one of his memoirs is currently being made into a movie (in which Robert De Niro plays Flynn’s father) and so he had to be on set.
Thankfully, he was able to reschedule for this semester, so at 7:00pm on Thursday, I headed to Furman 114 to hear him read. He read from 3 of his different collections of poetry, one of his memoirs, and a new book he’s writing about the experience of being on set while his memoir was being written. Everything he read was fantastic, so I’ll definitely be looking into reading more of his work, and hopefully seeing the movie when it comes out!
