An Atypical Wednesday
Wednesday afternoon, I had the opportunity to journey out of the Vandy bubble to volunteer at the Feed the Children warehouse here in Nashville.
Since Nashville is such a big city and Vanderbilt is surrounded by it, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities that are nearby. A lot of times, I get so caught up in school and activities on campus that I forget about these opportunities, so Wednesday afternoon was a great reminder.
Feed the Children is an international, non-profit relief organization that is privately funded and strives to provide food and resources to children and families in need. They have warehouses all over the country, where they receive donated food which they then distribute to those in need.
Feed the Children’s warehouse is huge and they receive pallets of food there which they then break up and repackage to deliver, often to victims of natural disasters, famine, war, or poverty. I went with a group from the Vanderbilt BCM, and we helped prepare boxes of food for the assembly line by moving them onto pallets and taking off the cardboard flaps and lids. It wasn’t the most exciting work, but it was cool to be able to tangibly see how we were helping, and it was a nice stress reliever and a chance to get to know the people I had came with better.
It’s always nice to take a break from the routine of things, and to be able to help out others in the process made for a wonderful Wednesday!
