Homecoming Week
Last night, Vanderbilt football beat Army 44-21 to wrap up a fun-filled homecoming week. Here’s a rundown of some of the fun events that took place throughout the week.
Throughout the week, students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities to win points for their student organization. The blood drive occurred throughout the entirety of the week. It gave students an opportunity to give back and save lives. According to the American Red Cross, a single blood donation can save three lives! On Tuesday, there was a dodgeball tournament on Magnolia lawn. Tons of student organizations signed up, some of them decked out in crazy uniforms. After the dodgeball, the players and spectators alike could recoup with the pizza party on Commons lawn.
One of the highlights of Homecoming week is the Commodore Quake concert in Memorial Gym. The Music Group always does a great job in finding bands for this event. This year, the acts were Trey Songz and My Morning Jacket. Trey Songz did an awesome job of pumping up the crowd. Then on came My Morning Jacket. To be honest, I had never heard of them, but was really impressed. They really know how to put on a live show. It was a really fun night!
Friday night, was the Block Party, where tons of students come together for a night of free food, giveaways, music and fun. This year, Karmin, (they’re awesome, check them out on Youtube here) performed. My friends and I always look forward to the Block Party as it gives us a chance to kick back and relax after a stressful week.
Finally, on Saturday, the campus was abuzz with spirit in anticipation for the football game. The game was really fun, as students and alumni together cheered the ‘Dores to victory! At halftime, I was given the opportunity to help present the Outstanding Senior award on the middle of the field. The Homecoming Committee also unveiled the check, with the amount that the alumni gave this year. This year it was a whopping 13 million! It really shows how dedicated the alumni are to helping this great university grow.
All in all, homecoming week was awesome, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s!
