My First Day
One really nice thing about Vanderbilt is our extended summer. Our summer is about three and a half months long. Though I miss Vandy every day and I can’t wait to get back, our long break has allowed me to ease into my summer responsibilities. I started with relaxation and family time, then added my physics class, and today, I started my internship. As I explained in my last post, I am working at the University of Miami in its Research in Medical Education Department. Today, I sat in on an Advanced Cardiac Life Support renewal course. The center at which I am working trains most of the firefighters, paramedics, emts and other first responders, as well as many doctors in prehospital and emergency healthcare.
The class was extremely interesting. As an undergraduate student with an expired CPR certification, it’s pretty safe to say that most of the lesson went over my head, but I definitely learned a few things that I will never forget.
Part of the course involves hands-on practice in different situations. The students work in teams to master dealing with things such as airway management and respiratory distress. As a member of a practice team, I got to perform CPR and intubate a doll!
Overall, my first day was a success.
