Taps & Tapas
My favorite dinner spot around campus is definitely Hillsboro Village. There are a bunch of restaurants, ranging from McDougal’s (Chicken strips) to Zumi (sushi), Fido (American food in a hipster atmosphere) to Provence (sandwiches, soups, and delicious desserts). This past weekend, I took a Finals Study Break and ventured into one of the newer restaurants, Taps & Tapas.
Taps & Tapas is a restaurant located right across the Belcourt Theater, which shows a lot of independent films and is the host of the Vanderbilt FLiCX program. They were having several Vanderbilt musicians perform, and one of my friends wanted to go see a guy from her VUceptgroup, so I agreed to go. I didn’t realize how much fun it would be!
The musicians were all amazing. If they had been selling CDs, I would have emptied my wallet and bought them all (luckily for my wallet, they weren’t). It was really awesome to see people you might have classes with singing, playing their guitars and pianos, and sounding like professional musicians.
The food was really great (I skipped to dessert. The creme brulee? Delicious). The atmosphere was awesome, but the restaurant was also fascinating. My friend and I spent awhile talking to the owner about the place. Everything in there is recycled from the building itself. The bar is made out of doors they found in the walls. The tables were made from old walls they took down, and then were painted with the faces of celebrities the owners know (they own a record label based out of Austin).
All together, it was an incredible experience. I feel really lucky to have such a cool spot just a few-minute walk from my dorm. They have live music every night, so I assure you I’ll be back soon.
