Summer Classes
Well, that was a short vacation. Summer classes started today. I am taking Physics I and II at Florida International University, which is about 40 minutes south of my house.I am enrolled in FIU as a non-degree seeking student. This basically means that I am only enrolled for the summer term and my credits are not going towards a degree from the institution. Instead, my credits will transfer to Vanderbilt upon my return in the fall. The Vanderbilt registrar pre-approved the class and the institution before I registered, so all I have to do is present my transcript and I’ll be good to go.
As many of you know, I am a pre-med student. Why, then, would I take a medical school requirement outside of Vanderbilt?
Well, as of now, I would like to major in Communications Studies. Even if I don’t end up majoring in this, I can absolutely assure you (and myself) that I will not be majoring in a science. I love medicine and science as it pertains to the body, but I also love to work with people. I cannot see myself working in a job that has limited interpersonal contact. If I don’t end up in medical school, I don’t know what I would do with a degree in Biology, Chemistry, or another science.
Because I will be majoring outside the sciences, the medical school requirements do not overlap with my major. I pretty much have to double major. Taking physics at home this summer, will not only allow me to truly master the material, as it is my only class, but I will be able to go back to Vanderbilt in the fall with a little less stress. I will be able to focus on my true interests and explore the Communications department in hopes of finding my passion.
