Melodores rep Vandy in NYC, congratulated by Sam Tsui
As TC mentioned in his earlier post, last weekend the Melodores had the distinct honor to compete at the ICCA Finals, joining the other top 6 groups in the nation and also the winner of the UK competition. It was a whirlwind of a weekend. We arrived at the Laguardia Airport around 9:30 pm and then took the bus and subway into midtown NYC where we stayed, right near the Lincoln Center. We hopped into bed shortly after, as we all wanted to rest up for the big day.
We decided to meet for lunch at a pizzeria for lunch at 1pm, so everyone was free to roam the city as they liked until then. Some chose to hang out around Times Square, we had a photo shoot at Central Park, and a few went the Met Museum of Art.
We all met at Alice Tully Hall for the preshow meeting at 3pm to hear the producers of the show give guidelines and also for us to draw our performance order. We drew 1st. That didn’t discourage us at all, as we were ready to come out and set the pace of the competition. We had a great performance and ultimately placed 3rd behind the incredibly talented groups, BYU’s Vocal Point and Berklee College of Music’s Pitch Slapped. In addition to our 3rd place finish, our choreographer, Ben Edquist, was given the award for “Outstanding Choreography” for our entire set!
The weekend was wildly successful for the Melodores, Vanderbilt and the ICCA South region, as we were the youngest group in history to make it to ICCA Finals, let alone place in the competition! We met a lot of exceptionally talented groups, well-known authorities in the a cappella realm…and even YouTube sensation, Sam Tsui!
The Melodores are going to be taking a break from practicing for the next couple weeks in order to allow time to study for exams..but rest assured, we WILL be back at it soon! Sing Off Season 3 auditions are May 14th in Nashville. We WILL be there. Wish us luck!
