My Best Advice
2010 was quite an eventful year for me. Not only did I start college, but I successfully survived my first semester! Though my grades were not as high as I hoped the would have been, I have learned so much more outside of the classroom than I ever expected. Here, I give you the few words of wisdom I have to share with incoming college students.
1. Buy Memory Foam for your dorm mattress. Sleep in college is rare. Therefore, it is important to make sure that any sleep that you get is quality. My 3-inch mattress topper was my single best investment. I really sleep like a princess in my dorm.
2. Be organized. College was the first time I was truly on my own. I had to learn how to manage my time and get my work done, while budgeting time for fun. I didn’t realize how much more efficient I could be if I planned my days out. It also helps to keep your dorm room neat. Such a small space is hard to live in, but the neater you keep it, the easier it is.
3. Do something that would make your high school friends laugh at you. For me, this one was especially easy. I wore a sundress with cowboy boots to a football game this season. My friends at home thought I was crazy. I’m not crazy; I’m just embracing my school’s culture.
4. Explore the city. Maybe this one doesn’t apply to all schools, but if you come to Vandy, you must explore Nashville because it is AMAZING. This semester, I went to a play, a cooking class, a country music concert! I figure I should take advantage of all that this city has to offer, especially if my time here is limited.
I hope that you all have a happy and healthy new year!
