I Just Did Something I Thought I Would Never Do…

…I declared a minor in… Communication Studies! To those that haven’t read an entry of mine before, I am a Musical Arts major, my instrument being voice. So many people, (myself including before today), had preconceptions about declaring a second major or minor in addition to music curriculum at Blair. Is it too hard? Do I have enough time? These are things I pondered for a while. As music students at Vanderbilt, we have the opportunity to take about 1/3 of our classes in the Liberal Arts. With a little research into our curriculum, I discovered how easy it was for me to “work” a minor into my degree program. The great thing is that I don’t have to take extra classes to graduate; many of my minor classes will satisfy my liberal arts curriculum.

It was SO EASY to declare my minor..literally all I had to do was:

1. Print two minor declaration forms off Vanderbilt’s website

2. Write my name and desired minor down

3. Turn in the sheets into the Communication Studies Department and the Arts & Sciences main office …and I was good to go.

Why did you all of a sudden did I make the change? Great question you ask! Over the past few months as a Tour Guide with the OUA and a participant with the Ambassadores, I have discovered  a vast amount of satisfaction and enjoyment in communicating and interacting with groups of people. Being a performer, I feel public speaking and presentation skills work hand in hand with stage performance so all in all, I think the two areas of study will mesh very well. Furthermore, in reading the courses I get to take as a Communication Studies minor, I cannot wait to start Spring Semester!
