‘Dore for a Day
I’m involved with the ‘Dore for a Day program with the AmbassaDores, and I hosted my first students last week! I actually had a lot of fun and I think I showed the students a good, real perspective of Vandy. We started out walking to the Commons and eating lunch in the dining hall, because that’s where freshmen eat the majority of their meals (I especially love the sandwiches and Asian cuisine there). I really enjoyed telling the prospective students about college life and answering questions about specific activities they were interested in.
Next, we went to my English 118W class, which focuses on duplicity in the works of William Shakespeare, his contemporaries, and successors. Most people either love or hate Shakespeare, and I definitely identify with the first group. Even though the ‘Dore for a Day students hadn’t read the play we were reading at the time, they said it was still helpful to experience a real college classroom discussion, so they have an idea of where to set their expectations. After my English class, I had Spanish, so the students walked around campus with a hallmate of mine who also gave her opinion of Vanderbilt and all it has to offer. After the day was over, I felt like those students had a pretty good picture of college life at Vandy; it made me wish I had participated in ‘Dore for a Day when I was trying to decide on a college, because it would have expedited the process immensely.
