Melodores in Action
This past weekend was the ICCA Acappella competition at UGA in Athens, Georgia. Although the Melodores did not advance to the next level of the competition, we did have a successful performance and a great time to bond with each other. As I mentioned before, Vanderbilt does a great job of actively supporting student organizations; they were willing to pay for food, travel expenses and lodging. This was a huge burden off all the members of the Melodores, as we were able to focus more on our performance rather than get caught up in the logistical issues of the trip.
The week before the trip was challenging, drilling choreography and vocals night after night. Eventually, these hard nights turned into fond memories that we can all look back on with levity.
Getting back into classes after the long weekend was not that difficult because I knew what was expected of me in my classes. While Vanderbilt is supportive of extracurricular outings, we all realize that school doesn’t stop for us just because we partake in a weekend event. I still had tests and such to prepare for this week and ended up doing fine, luckily.
On an unrelated note, pledgeship is underway in Greek life at Vandy. My roommate is pledging AePi and when I see him (which is not often), he tells me he is enjoying the experience. When he is not in classes, he is normally at the fraternity house doing activities to get to know the brothers. Some worry that the amount of time necessary for Greek life is too much on top of academics, but my roommate explains that while his schedule is busy every day, he has enough time to get everything done because each frat imposes at least three study hours a night at the house.
