Back to School
The first official week of classes are done, albeit only a three-day week. What counts is that I have met all of my professors, gotten all the syllabi and received the expectations of each class. My schedule is a lot fuller than it was last semester, so I have done something I never thought I would do before college: I outlined my week on paper. I never saw it necessary to schedule meals and exercise sessions and most importantly, my practice time. Through my first semester, I have found that unless I schedule my extracurricular activities as though they are curricular, I tend to blow them off. It’s not as bad of an idea as I thought, scheduling my day because it encourages me to get into an organized habit, which is something that I knew I needed to train myself to do before I got to Vanderbilt.
On a lighter note, it has been great to reconnect with friends back at school after the nearly month-long hiatus that is called holiday break. It was great to see and spend time with old friends back home, but being back I realized how important Vanderbilt friends are, as they are the people of your family away from home. It is great to be close with a significant other or great friend back home, but it becomes a necessity to get close enough to somebody here that you can truly feel comfortable enough to share your ups and downs with. There is only so much a friend or family member can do from a remote location. Having a friend here that can listen to an issue in person is really an integral part of my comfort and stability at Vanderbilt. I’m not the kind of person to have like 40 friends that I talk to, but rather two or three really close friends that I can deeply trust. It’s good to know that my needs in terms of friendship are met while I am here at school.
