“Should auld acquaintance be forgot?”

Posted by on Sunday, December 27, 2009 in College Life, General Information.

It is the time between Christmas and New Years that everyone really struggles to find something to do. During this time certain things make it feel more trying than others: Family has left, friends are away, no shopping to be done, the good movies have already come out, people don’t have much money to spend (students that is). One thing is either very exciting or very nerveracking during this time, grade term reports. everyone seems to make such a big deal about your entire 4 month semester that it really all boiled down to what you receive in a little white envelope from your registrar’s office during this lull week. Apprehension is met with glee or dismay but the one thing that always happens after that envelope is opened is New Years.

This is why I would like to propose that for all college students, New Year’s Eve parties should be renamed “New Term Party”. Sure you will have back to school parties after formal recruitment ends, but this night, December 31st is all about love and being with people you care about while celebrating another calendar year of life that has brought us to this point. We do not want to dwell on the grades received not so long ago, but rather, look forward to what may be in the coming months, semesters, and year.

So, as we all sing and mumble the traditional words of auld lang syne, let me answer the first question in the song: “Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?”

Yes for tongiht is a night to look forward and not back on what was.
