Disc Golf!
College is all about trying new things, right? Well, last weekend, I had the chance to play my first ever game of disc golf.
For those of you unfamiliar with disc golf, as I once was, it’s a sport in which you attempt to get a Frisbee-like disc into a basket in the least amount of throws possible. This sounds deceptively simple, however, because it doesn’t account for the fact you are attempting to throw the disc very far across a course that is filled with trees.
Two of my friends are somewhat experienced disc golfers and invited along a group of us to introduce us to the disc golf world and so we set out to the course at Seven Oaks Park to try our hand throwing some discs. It was definitely a fun experience! Up until about a month ago, I had never heard of disc golf, so I was excited to get a chance to play.
The course was really beautiful, especially since fall is just starting to set in here at Vanderbilt and the leaves are starting to change color. We had absolutely perfect weather–it was sunny with just the slightest chill. I certainly didn’t uncover any untapped disc golf talent, but I’d definitely be interested in playing again in the future. I also came out with an awesome disc golf injury (aka a small scratch on my leg from fishing a disc out of the bushes (this should say something about my disc-throwing abilities)), so I felt like that qualified me as having played an intense game.
So, in case you’re looking out for something fun and unique to try in the Vanderbilt area, I’d definitely try out disc golf! It’s just one of the many unique, new things I’ve tried here at Vandy.
