Connecting with Your VU Admissions Counselor
Aug. 4, 2010—I just finished a book titled “Don’t Stalk the Admissions Officer” where the advice was average at best, but the humor was timely. Many of my students want me to have a face to put with their name, but in the quest to become real to me, a few students exhibit unreal behavior. Examples include...
Summertime at OUA
Jun. 29, 2010—People I meet throughout life often believe my job is on a 10-month contract with summers off work. Contrary to belief, however, there is a great deal of behind-the-scenes work to be done in the summer months and I am here at OUA year-round. So what exactly do admission counselors do when they’re not traveling...
Music in Music City
Jun. 9, 2010—Summer came to Nashville quickly! It’s been in the 90s all week and despite the hot days and muggy nights, the city is flourishing with activity! This week and weekend is particularly exciting because Nashville will play host to two amazing music festivals: the CMA Festival and Bonaroo. The four day CMA Festival this year...
On Summer Time
Jun. 2, 2010—In the summertime, I sometimes take to walking our campus to get some air and clear my head. Vanderbilt's resplendent campus in the summer morning sun - it's extraordinary.
Life in Nashville
Nov. 26, 2009—I love being in my hometown for Thanksgiving. My parents are the strongest people I know, my sister makes me laugh till my sides hurt, and my high school friends tell amazing stories from their adventures all over the world. I come home for my family. At the conclusion of the holiday, though, I couldn’t...
New OUA Website = One-Click Connect to Vandyland
Nov. 11, 2009—Today we debuted our newly structured and redesigned website to our prospective students families and high school partners. Features of the new site a streamlined and dramaticall simplified structure where all of the admissions/financial aid/Vanderbilt information you've asked for is one click away including a "find your major" drop down. No more having to crawl through dozens of websites just to find your major.
Waitlist Calling Starts
May. 7, 2009—We will start making offers of admission from our waitlist and we will begin doing so starting this evening and tomorrow. A review of our deposits reveals that we are exactly where we had hoped to be, that is, to be able to admit from the waitlist. I do not know how many offers we...
National Reply Deadline Update
May. 1, 2009—Today marks the National Candidate Reply deadline. At Vanderbilt, the May 1st deadline is a postmarked deadline so for those accepted students waiting until the last minute, your reply to us MUST get in the mail today. For everyone on the waitlist, you've patiently waited to hear if we will be making offers from the waitlist. As it looks today, it does appear that we will be able to make some offers of admission from the waitlist.
Deposit and Decline Reports: Shoe Officially on the Other Foot
Apr. 1, 2009—I had mentioned on this blog before that the time will come when us admissions folks will wait on your decisions. That time has officially arrived.
I've Been Admitted – Now What?: April Edition
Mar. 31, 2009—The letters have gone and been received by most across the country. Usually at this point, the readership of our blog becomes a little segmented depending on which envelope you received from us. The informational needs of each of the different groups certainly keep us busy enough to fill the time vacated by less reading. My hope this week is to provide some "what now" information to our admitted students (today) and our waitlisted students (later this week). For students who were denied and who wish to appeal our decision, see the comments section from the last post (3/26) for details about that process.
Hot Chicken and Data Days
Feb. 24, 2009—Nashville has plenty of culinary choices. But there is one type of food which is distinctive to Music City: Hot Chicken. Hot Chicken is southern-style pan-fried chicken cooked in a cast-iron skillet. There is, however, one twist. The chicken is breaded in a super-secret blend of spices which give the chicken its…hot. And trust me,...
Admitted at ED?: advice for approaching the rest of your senior year
Jan. 16, 2009—All admitted students to Vanderbilt will be asked to submit a final transcript once it comes available and it never fails that we see a very small handful of students who packed up the intellectual circus a little early that last semester. At that point our office has a decision to make, and it is a no-one-size-fits-all determination. My general advice is succinct, if not completely predictable, don't risk it.
