MOSAIC Weekend 2011
This past week was an exciting week for many Vanderbilt applicants! Last Friday we welcomed our newest ‘Dores to the Class of 2015, those who received admission through Early Decision II. Further, we sent out MOSAIC Weekend invitations to a limited number of our wonderful multicultural applicants.
The MOSAIC Weekend invitation informs a select number of Regular Decision students of their admission to Vanderbilt before other RD applicants and invites them to spend a weekend on campus this March. Despite the early notification, students invited to MOSAIC will also receive an official admit packet by April 1st. Additionally, some students who received Early Decision admission will receive MOSAIC Weekend invites.
MOSIAC is part of Vanderbilt’s effort to develop and maintain a campus community of ethnic diversity and cultural understanding. OUA selects students for MOSAIC who will contribute to this effort and then connects those students to the multicultural opportunities on campus. The selection process involves many of the factors considered in the admissions process.
The program is small and due to space limitations, we cannot invite all multicultural students who we will ultimately admit. In other words, don’t panic if you didn’t receive a MOSAIC Weekend invite! It is still possible to receive admission to Vanderbilt’s Class of 2015. Case in point, there are many Early Decision students who did not receive MOSAIC invites (but they will absolutely be part of our Class of 2015).
Because MOSAIC Weekend is a focused program, invites are nontransferable and we cannot add any additional students to the weekend. Please do not contact OUA to ask for a MOSAIC invite.
There is no cost for MOSAIC, but students are responsible for their own transportation. However, we offer travel reimbursement on a case-by-case basis, and we also provide free buses from Atlanta and Memphis. Students who choose to attend MOSAIC Weekend must stay for the entirety of the program.
If you received a MOSAIC Weekend invitation and you have questions, please contact Brandi Smith in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (615-322-0906).
We are thrilled to showcase this campus to MOSAIC Weekend participants! Y’all are going to love Vanderbilt and the Commodore community.

I am curious as to the selection criteria for the MOSAIC program. I ask because I noticed while perusing other college-related sites that a few of those who received an invite were white applicants who stated they had made no mention of any kind of any diversity on their applications. As the parent of a qualified non-white applicant who considers Vanderbilt his top-choice school, I found that information troubling.

Sandra: We review applications holistically and many different OUA counselors make the MOSAIC invite decisions. They take multicultural backgrounds and/or work with multicultural groups into serious consideration. You have to remember that individuals can put information out there on the web that is false or with the intent to be inflammatory. Here at OUA (and on this blog in particular) we place truth and transparency in the highest regard. I can personally assure you that we did not invite students to MOSAIC without good reason. I can also assure you that we are giving your child the fullest respect in our ongoing review.
