2011 Early Decision I Mailing Day – The Letters are Out
I am thrilled to report that decision letters left 2305 West End Avenue this afternoon, and are now on their way to Early Decision I applicants. If you have been a long-time reader of our blog, you have read past mailing day posts detailing the academic quality, diversity, balance, and overall leadership of our classes. This year’s class of 2015 is once again shaping up to be one of the strongest in Vanderbilt’s history.
While it is our practice only to release a full statistics report for ED I & II together in February, I can provide some preliminary details regarding this exciting new group of Commodores:
- As published in the New York Times Choice Blog, early indications show a healthy double-digit increase in applications for Vanderbilt’s early decision class.
- The reputation of Vanderbilt as one of the most diverse highly-selective universities in the country is growing, with nearly all aspects of diversity (intellectual, multicultural, geographic, etc) increasing among students in our early decision applicant pool.
- This year’s ED class distinguishes themselves with a balance of personal and leadership abilities: 97% of all admitted students received at least one significant honor and/or held a key leadership position in their high school or community.
A few days ago, Kylie posted some practical details about the ED I mailing, as well as other information for applicants. For students who will be getting news that is tough to handle, I wrote a piece for this blog called Wave on Wave a couple of years ago about my own dealing with bad news that I now offer up to you. I hope that it helps.

Emily: Don’t get too hung up on specifics. We’re referring to leadership positions such as NHS President or captain of a sports team; a wide variety of honors and leadership positions are represented in the incoming ED class.

Although you wouldn’t be elected to be drum major of your high school band, but selected by your Band Director because of an array of qualities, would it be considered a “key leadership position” in Vanderbilt’s eyes?

Ryan: Yes, drum major would be a leadership position in our eyes.
Please, readers, do not get hung up on these phrases. Vanderbilt is at the tippy top of numerical markers for our incoming classes in recent years and we are seeking additional ways to indicate the success of our selected students. These indicators are meant to be illustrative, but are not something you should worry about.

Hey everyone – Im part of the Class of 2014. I went through what you’re going through last year so I wanted to give some advice. I know it may seem hard, but find something to do to keep your mind off of this. TV, sleep, reading – hanging out with friends. Also, the fact that you have applied is a great thing – Whether you get in or not, I am sure you are all deserving, sadly it just gets harder every year. Good luck to all, try and relax. You will know soon enough.

William: Early Decision students are either admitted or denied. There is no deferral except for special circumstances.

I got the bad news today, and I’m still pretty bummed. This blog is really informative and encouraging. No worries, I’ll be applying again as a transfer student. Vandy has not heard the last of me!
