MOSAIC 2009 Invites Nearly Out the Door

Early next week our office will be mailing invitations for Vanderbilt’s MOSAIC 2009. This program is geared to highlight the vast diversity of Vanderbilt (One of the nation’s most diverse and inclusive leading Universities according to a recent report from the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education) for newly admitted students of color for the incoming class of 2009. MOSAIC is our signature multicultural student recruitment program and one that we are incredibly proud of, not only for rave reviews it gets from students (it has the highest percentage of students who attend who ultimately enroll of any program we run), but also that it has become a program that literally the entire VU community has bought in to. You see it from the fact that admitted students who attend are hosted by current Vanderbilt students (from an amazingly diverse background), to the central role that the Vanderbilt cultural student organizations play in the planning and coordination of the program, to the fact that the Vanderbilt NPHC fraternity and sorority step show, a highly popular community-wide event, is coordinated to coincide with MOSAIC weekend.
A couple of key facts about our MOSAIC invites:
- Students invited to MOSAIC receive a packet that informs them that they will be admitted to Vanderbilt, even though their official admit packet will not arrive until the beginning of April, when all of the rest of the decision letters go out.
- Not all students of color who will ultimately be admitted to Vanderbilt can be invited to MOSAIC. It’s a space and program capacity issue. We utilize a competitive and holistic review process to select who gets invited to the program.
- DO NOT assume that if you are a student of color and you are not invited to MOSAIC, that you are de facto denied to VU. Your application is still under consideration, and you will receive your admission decision at the beginning of April.

If you were already admitted ED do you automatically get an invite to Mosaic weekend?

My daughter received her invitation packet yesterday. The enclosed materials says that they have to arrive in Nashville by noon on Thursday, March 12. We live in Los Angeles and the earliest flight to arrive in Nashville is at 1:39PM. Does Vandy make special arrangements for invitees from California or the west coast for that matter?

That still should be okay. We’ve helped make arrangements for students to arrive late due to flights before. Your daughter might miss some of the opening activities, but she would be there for the major aspects of the program (namely the host matching part – all visiting MOSAIC students are paired up with a current VU student host). Just get in touch with our office and let us know what your travel arrangements are looking like.
Congratulations to your daughter, hope we see her in Nashville in March.

Joey, I’m also attending Mosaic and flying in from Los Angeles. I’m arriving a day early so I’m finding a hotel to stay at for 1 night before actually going on campus.

I am having trouble getting to Vanderbilt for the weekend. I have already mailed in my forms along with a travel re-imbursement but I can not find a ticket for transportation, neither through plane or bus, that I can afford, this is already discounting the 100 re-imbursement. Is there a way I can find other Mosaic scholars in my area, who if driving by car would not mind car-pooling and sharing gas money so that both Vandy and mysely and themselves save money?

Yes, transportation from the Nashville Airport to Vanderbilt will be provided on Thursday, 3/12 for MOSAIC participants. VU Admissions staff will be available in the baggage claim area at the airport from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM to shuttle students to campus. If you will be arriving after 1 PM, please notify our office so we can arrange transportation.
