MOSAIC Multicultural Student Weekend: March 13-16, 2008

Posted by on Thursday, February 28, 2008 in Application Process, Diversity at Vanderbilt, MOSAIC - VU's Multicultural Student Recruitment Program.

It’s back… From March 13th to 16th – possibly the most celebrated multicultural campus visit event in the nation – will reign over campus. MOSAIC Weekend! MOSAIC is a multicultural campus visit weekend for selected students of color who have been admitted to Vanderbilt. An early notice of admission is included in the MOSAIC Invitation for those selected students. The program enters its 6th year. There tends to be an incredible amount of buzz surrounding the event – and sometimes that “buzz” can create some misinformation. Allow me to demystify:

  • Not receiving a MOSAIC Invitation does not affect a student-of-color’s candidacy for admission nor does it infer that a student has been denied. On the contrary, our admissions office is still reviewing many applications at this time. In fact, there are many admitted students of color(not aware of the good news to come) who were not invited to MOSAIC. The goal is admission to Vanderbilt; not MOSAIC Weekend. Vanderbilt will mail decision letters to every single Regular Decision applicant on March 27th, 2008.
  • MOSAIC Weekend is not a scholarship weekend. MOSAIC is solely a multicultural campus visit event highlighting the intellectual opportunities and multicultural experiences on campus. Activities include information sessions with the Deans from each of the four colleges, multicultural student panel luncheon, a live music performance, a variety show featuring student organizations and the annual Step Show held at Vanderbilt.
  • There is no fee to participate in MOSAIC. It is free.

MOSAIC Weekend attracts about 180-200 students each year from California to Maine. It affords students who may not have visited Vanderbilt the opportunity to do so in an environment that proudly intimates through discussion and activity Vanderbilt’s devout commitment to diversity. MOSAIC Invitations were mailed out February 15th to those selected students. So far, we have more than a 120 students registered for the event. Only students who received a MOSAIC invitation can register. The deadline is the end of this week.

Does this mean all decisions (besides those who were informed early for the purpose of MOSAIC) will be mailed ON March 27, or BY March 27?

why were these 180-200 selected? Can we assume that they were the best 180-200 applicants of color?

Do students apply for admission into MOSAICS? How are the students selected to participate? What I have read, the program is very worthwhile and does lead to diversity.
