Sorority Perks

As a member of Vanderbilt’s varsity Women’s Lacrosse team, I hope to offer a new perspective to the blogging site by providing information about activities, services, and service opportunities both inside and outside of athletics. Having just gone through sorority recruitment, I would like to focus this first blog on my participation in Greek Life.

Although lacrosse consumes most of my time, Vanderbilt’s athletic department is unique in that it allows student-athletes the opportunity to get involved in organizations outside of playing sports. Currently I am a member the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.  At first I was hesitant to even rush my freshman year because I didn’t know if I would be able to balance it with lacrosse.  Yet after hearing how fun it was meeting new people and becoming more involved, I decided to rush my sophomore year.

Joining a sorority was one of the best decisions I’ve made here. There are so many girls involved in so many different organizations that it allowed me to become more informed about what was going on around campus. You can get involved in the sorority and its outside activities as much or as little as you want – and as a student-athlete, this is huge. However, the more you put into them, the more you’ll get out of them. Through Kappa I have become involved in MannaFit and Reading is Fundamental (Kappa’s Philanthropy). What I have found to be the neatest part about a sorority though is that your membership goes beyond Vanderbilt.  The extensive alumni networks of sororities can help you get internships and jobs during the summers and even after you graduate.

Moral of this blog:  Sororities are a great way to meet new people, build connections, and get more involved around campus. For those of you who are athletes and are worried about balancing your sports schedule with Greek Life… its doable.  Sororities are understanding about your schedule and joining one is a great way to create a unique teammate-like bond outside the team itself.
