An Inside Look at McGugin Magic

All freshmen in the College of Arts and Sciences are required to take a freshman writing seminar. I chose to take an American Studies Class called Food for Thought. We study food in American culture while honing our writing skills.

The final project for the class is a research paper on any topic related to Food in America. I decided to write about dining halls for athletes, or training tables, on college campuses. Luckily, the Hendrix Room at the McGugin Center on campus is the top-rated training table in the nation! Sneaking into the Hendrix Room is on Sports Illustrated’s list of things to do before you die because only Vanderbilt athletes and coaches are allowed inside. So I made a few phone calls, scheduled a few appointments and next thing I know, I am eating dinner with the girls soccer team and world- famous Chef Majid ‘Magic’ Noori, who essentially invented the training table!

Needless to say, my research not only consists of the standard book sources, but also first hand experience and interviews. Chef Magic’s creations are delicious and fresh. I had kiwi today for the first time in three months. I wonder if the soccer team is looking for walk-ons because if it means I get to eat with Chef Magic everyday, I’m in!
